About Crump Family Farm
Crump Family Farm was established as its own entity as a farm in 1876. This wooded sanctuary would eventually be purchased by Jeff and Bessie Crump.
This dutiful family that consists of Jeff, Bessie, and their 6 children, farmed the land for over 36 years. The full practice of raising and processing tobacco, cultivating large vegetable gardens, sustaining, and controlling livestock was all normal routine in providing for a family of that era.
Jeff, his oldest son Leon, and brother George built the barn in 1958. This barn would function for milking and tending to the livestock. Leon’s name and the year the barn was built are carved in 2 of the supporting stones, check it out when you are here.
in 1979, Jeff and Bessie’s youngest son, Edd Lee, would take ownership of the homestead.
Edd Lee and his wife, Janice, would bring up their 2 daughters on this same farm. Provisions for this small family would largely be in the same manner, livestock, garden, and tobacco. Edd Lee built an addition on to the barn and added tier poles throughout, converting the milk barn into a full purpose tobacco barn. Over the next 20 years this would be the barn’s main use.
Along with farming, Edd Lee and Janice both maintained full-time careers. As time moved along, the girls grew up and moved from the farm, the tobacco industry began to decreased, the barn then stood as a catch-all storage building. this stance continued for another 20 years.
Now in 2020, many changes had occurred and Edd Lee and his wife were both retired. one of their granddaughters had decided to get married at the farm. This inspired the renovation of Crump Family Farm. The barn and the family now had a new vison.
2020/2021 brought the renovation full force,(before and after pictures). Utilizing the entire family, the process took just over a year to complete. Recycling and reusing as much as possible. a milk barn, a tobacco barn, and later a storage barn, each intent served over 20 years. Many stories from yesteryear drift through this barn as if a whisper to the glory it has reclaimed.
Staying true to the history of the barn and the story of family, we hope we have done justice for Crump Family Farm and your unique event.
