What to Do After the Wedding: Thank You Notes, Dress Care & More

The wedding day may be over, but your journey as a newly married couple is just beginning — and there are a few important (and surprisingly meaningful) steps to take after the celebration winds down. At Crump Family Farm, I’ve seen brides and grooms walk away glowing with joy, but also unsure of what’s next once the bouquet has been tossed and the lights have dimmed.
Today, I’m sharing a simple, heartfelt guide to help you wrap up your wedding season with grace, gratitude, and ease.

Send Thank You Notes with Heartfelt Intention:
Thank you notes may feel like a small detail, but they leave a lasting impression. Guests, family members, and vendors all played a role in your big day — acknowledging their support goes a long way.
Tips for Stress-Free Thank You Notes
  • Set a realistic deadline: Aim to send them out within 6–8 weeks after the wedding.
  • Personalize wherever you can: Mention the gift by name, or reference a special moment you shared.
  • Keep supplies organized: Create a designated space for cards, stamps, pens, and your guest list.
  • Divide and conquer: One writes, the other addresses envelopes — teamwork makes it go faster!

Preserve and Store Your Wedding Dress Properly
Your dress holds some of your most precious memories, so taking care of it right away is essential. Even invisible stains can set into the fabric if left untreated too long.
How to Care for Your Dress After the Wedding
  • Schedule cleaning within 3–4 weeks
  • Use a preservation specialist rather than a standard dry cleaner
  • Request acid-free storage materials
  • Store the dress in a dark, cool, dry place
If displaying the dress is important to you, many brides do a “day-after” photoshoot or preservation shadowbox.

Organize Your Wedding Photos
Your photos will become treasures you’ll revisit for decades. While your photographer is editing, start creating a plan for how you’d like to use them.
  • Choose favorites for albums or frames
  • Create a shared folder for family
  • Select prints for thank you cards
  • Order a canvas or keepsake book
Tip 1: Make a “Wedding Memories” folder on your phone so you always have quick access to your best moments. This album can also be a shared album on your phone.
Tip 2: If you post them, even just a few, on social media they will come up as memories in the future, and you will get to relive your special moments all over again. This is a suggestion I would make for all the special moments of your life!

Freeze the Top Tier of Your Wedding Cake (if you want to!)
If you love tradition, freezing the top tier for your first anniversary can be a sweet way to celebrate.
Best Way to Freeze Your Cake
  • Wrap it tightly in plastic wrap
  • Add a second layer of foil
  • Store in an airtight container
  • Wrap the container for extra protection
Or as many couples may have started doing — order a fresh mini cake next year in the same flavor! At Crump Family Farm, we are suckers for tradition but do it however you want to.

Return or Exchange Duplicate Gifts
Before everything gets put away, take a moment to sort through your gifts. If you received duplicates or items you weren’t expecting, now is the time to exchange or return them.
Helpful idea: Create a “home setup” checklist so you can track what items you still need for married life.

Complete Any Remaining Vendor Reviews
Your vendors worked hard to bring your wedding day to life. Taking a moment to leave them a positive review not only shows appreciation — it helps other brides make confident decisions.
At Crump Family Farm, one of our favorite things is reading the reviews to see what helped the most and stood out to the couple or their families.

Update Your Legal Documents:
If you’re changing your name, you’ll need to update:
  • Social Security
  • Driver’s license
  • Passport
  • Bank accounts
  • Employer records
This process can take a little time, so starting early helps.

Enjoy the First Weeks of Married Life
The most important thing you can do after your wedding? Enjoy being married.
Take a weekend getaway. Have a quiet dinner at home. Go for a walk and daydream about what’s ahead. These first days together are incredibly special — let yourselves soak them in.

Your wedding may be over, but this beautiful new chapter is just beginning. Whether you're sending thank you notes, preserving your dress, organizing photos, or simply settling into married life, each small step helps you transition into this next season with peace and joy.

If you're planning a wedding and dreaming of a warm, heartfelt venue to begin your story, we’d love to welcome you at Crump Family Farm. Schedule a tour anytime — I’d be honored to meet you!
